Reigning champions Gujarat Titans kicked off their title defence in much the same way as they had claimed the title last year, with a streak of steel and ruthlessness, wading through tense moments towards the end and winning by five wickets with four balls to spare.
With Ruturaj Gaikwad going strong, CSK looked on course for a 200-plus total before Titans stemmed the flow of runs in the middle overs.
Gaikwad was all class in his 92 off 50 balls
CSK eventually managed 178 for seven which Titans chased down with four balls to spare and five wickets in hand.
Gill played some jaw-dropping strokes. in his 63 off 36 balls to set up a fine win for the home team. The Titans got home in 19.2 overs.
Titans, impact-player Sai Sudharsan, who was used in place of an injured Kane Williamson, contributed with 22 off 17 balls.
